New Info on Why diets don’t work… the problem, the solution
Did you know 90% of dieters regain the weight they lose? If I see a 90% failure rate for anything, I question the process more than the people. People are way too smart to fail 90% of the time.
Let’s look at the process. There’s a $30 billion diet and weight loss industry out there promoting products, pills, books and theories… many originated in the minds of very smart, experienced, good-hearted people. I really don’t question their intentions… I’m sure they believe in their method and truly hope we’ll lose the weight quickly and permanently.
However, they’re backed by a marketing and publishing engine with financial goals. I don’t question this either…. In fact, that’s the beauty of American capitalism. If I see a need and think I have a solution, I’m free to create and promote my solution. Beautiful.
But how can a country with the best medical resources in the world have a steady increase in heart disease, diabetes, and cancer? Why are we seeing high cholesterol and blood pressure issues in our children?
I think it’s simple. We’re confused…. and we’ve forgotten basic Anatomy and Biology (or if you’re like me, never really absorbed it anyway). If we understood how the body worked, how it digests food, absorbs nutrients and how those nutrients can affect our health, we’d be able to make decisions that make sense for us, not what worked for the author of the latest diet book.
We’d also look beyond the plate and factor in the rest of our life…another reason diets don’t work. They don’t take into account our relationships with others, how we feel about work, how we navigate stress and our ability to create our own happiness. All of these affect our health. When any one of them are out of whack, chances are we look to food to make up for the imbalance.
Losing the weight once doesn’t make life issues go away… Having the skills to navigate whatever life brings you, coupled with a sound understanding of how your body works will ensure you create the body and health you’d love (and are meant) to have.
