Arizona State Museum
Located on the University of Arizona campus, the Arizona State Museum is the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest and has been celebrating the enduring cultures of the Southwest for more than 120 years. This is a great educational activity to spend a couple of hours with the family or alone.
The Museum is not so big that it takes all day to go through; but it is large enough to offer a wonderful learning experience. Current featured exhibitions include the ongoing pottery collection, currently boasting more than 20,000 pieces representing 2,000 years of history as well as the Paths of Life exhibit highlighting the American Indians of the Southwest, in addition to a number of rotating, traveling exhibits.
Admission
The Arizona State Museum is FREE to children 17 and under as well as Museum members, and UA and Pima CC staff and students with ID. All other adults age 18+ are just $5.
While you are there be sure to ask about the numerous free programs and events that the Museum hosts throughout the year.
In addition to its educational spotlights, the museum building itself is something to be admired. The Arizona State Museum is housed in the original campus library. It continues to house important research units from the University of Arizona. Take some time to venture up to the upstairs reading room. With most of the original lighting intact you will feel like you stepped into one of the libraries out of an Indian Jones movie. Next time you need a little bit of time to kill, stop on by the Arizona State Museum. You will enjoy a very cool setting while learning a thing or two about the Natives of the region, You won’t regret it!
