Why You Should Line Dry Your Clothes, Especially in Tucson, Arizona

The word NOEL written with vintage wood printer blocks. Christmas message over old wood with a string of decorative red beads.

Are you looking for a way to save money and make your home more green?

Maybe you have never considered it, but I am going to share some of the benefits of line drying your laundry. Living in the dry climate of Tucson, Arizona is an ideal weather to line dry.

  1. It saves money. Dryers are one of the household tools that use up the most electricity. If you live in Tucson, Tucson Electric Power has a great program called Time of Use where you run your appliances during specific hours. They give you this cute refrigerator magnet so you know what times are non-peak hours to run your dishwasher and washer. We do this in my home and it is very easy to follow, conserves energy and saves us money. TEP also has some other money saving programs that could be a good fit for you.
  2. It saves clothes. Fabrics last longer if they are not put in the dryer and colors stay brighter. All The lint you take out of the dryer is the fabric wearing away. In our family we prefer to buy fewer quality clothing pieces.
  3. It uses fewer chemicals. Did you know the sun is a natural brightener and whitener. If you line dry your whites, the stains will get lighter naturally.
  4. It’s therapeutic. I genuinely enjoy hanging my clothes to dry and then all the money, energy and clothes I’m preserving makes me feel even better!

TIP* If you don’t like the stiffness of line-dried clothes put them in the dryer for 5 minutes.

TIP* Clothes don’t need to be line dried out, you could be line-dry them in the house as well, which is what I do.

TIP* Put white clothes in direct sunlight to whiten and brighten them.
